The fern Adiantum capillus-veneris possesses five cryptochromes (CRYs), which mediate the developmental responses of the plant to blue light. By transiently expressing beta-glucuronidase (GUS)-CRY translational fusions in transformed fern cells, Imaizumi et al. report on pages 81-95 of this issue that the intracellular localization of these CRY proteins varies according to light quality. For example, the newly identified CRY4 receptor localizes to the nucleus under red light, a finding that is illustrated on the cover, which shows a two-celled protonema stained for GUS activity and for DNA. The nucleus of the transformed tip cell is stained blue, indicating CRY4-GUS localization in this organelle; the white fluorescent nucleus in the basal cell indicates that this cell is not transformed. The black dot visible in the nucleus of tip cell is a gold particle that was used to carry the CRY4-GUS DNA construct into the cell.
